Chapter Nine
Raahi set foot on the first stone step that led up to the village, and a thrill went through him. He was not on the mainland yet, but this stone felt like home, this stone. . . .
"Move it." One of the captors nudged him forward
Raahi took a deep breath and marched up the solid steps with Kumar Raza beside him and his own countrymen on guard to make sure he didn't escape. He passed the circles of stone walls used to create flat fields against the side of the mountain. The scent of soil and the papa plants brought back memories of his childhood. How he and his sister had played hide and seek between the tall stalks of the choclo plants and helped their mother dig up the papas to bake for dinner.
His heart ached when he thought of his sister, Breena, her spirit singing in the Hall of his Ancestors, unless Samdrasen had already cut her stone loose and doomed her to torment. Raahi shuddered and wondered if he should tell Bolivar of his true reason for coming to Darvat. Perhaps if Bolivar knew what was really at stake, he would help Raahi get to the Hall of their Ancestors.
Raahi had promised Karishi not to tell anyone about it, but he'd already broken that promise when he confided in Kanvar.
Their guards marched them up several tiers of homes and gardens to the top level of the village. Sheep and alpacas sniffed at Raahi as he passed their pens and licked his hand when he reached up to pat their noses. But they shied away and huffed at Kumar as he approached. He was too tall, too light skinned, and smelled like a stranger.
Raahi and the others reached the top level with its large stone buildings and flagstone streets. Raahi's heart swelled a little with pride as Kumar stared at the elaborate carvings on the stone walls so expertly crafted that an outsider would not be able to see the seems between the stone blocks of the buildings. These houses and shops weren't like the plain black stone buildings the Maranies had constructed in Kundiland to withstand the Great Blue dragon fire. No, these buildings were awash in colorful stone. Rose marble and rainbow quarts, sparkling granite and flaming chert.
Kumar sucked in an appreciative breath.
"Haven't you seen a Darvati village before?" Raahi asked.
"Oh I have," Kumar said. "But every one is different, every building its own piece of art. And, it has been a long time since I last hunted in Darvat. Back when I met your father."
"I hope he's all right," Raahi said as their captors stopped in front of a solid granite building. It had only one stone door, which faced the street, and iron bars across a single window on the side. The men produced a key, unlocked the door, and motioned Raahi and Kumar Raza inside.
"Raahi's a child," Kumar said. "He shouldn't be in prison. Is there no one in the village that
